  • How old (or young) can a boy be to join Cub Scouting?

Cub Scouting is for boys in the first through fifth grades, or 7 to 10 years of age. Boys who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, can no longer join Cub Scouting, but they may be eligible to join the Boy Scouting or Venturing program.

  • What supplies and equipment are needed to participate in Cub Scouting?

At minimum, each boy in Cub Scouting should have a uniform and a handbook. Each year, the handbook changes, as does the cap and neckerchief, but other uniform parts remain the same for at least the first three years. When a boy enters a Webelos den, he may need to obtain a new uniform if the parents in the den opt for the khaki-and-olive uniform.

Additional supplies and equipment may be needed for certain activities such as camping trips or field days. What equipment is needed, as well as whether it will be provided by the unit, will vary from pack to pack. Den and pack leaders should provide parents with information about any supplies that will be required at the beginning of each program year.

  • How can I become an adult volunteer in Cub Scouting?

Express your interest to the pack leaders—the Cubmaster, chartered organization representative, or members of the unit committee. While there's no guarantee that a specific role or position will be available—and there may be a selection process among several candidates even if the position is currently vacant—there is usually some way in which you can contribute, and most units are glad for any offer of help.

  • How can I help my Scout?

  1. Work with your son on projects

  2. Help your Cub Scout along the advancement trail

  3. Participate in monthly pack meetings

  4. Attend parent-leader conferences

  5. Go on family campouts with your son

  6. Provide support for your son's den and pack

The Cub Scout years are developing years for young boys, falling between the dependence of early childhood and the relative independence of early adolescence. As he grows, your son will gain the ability to do more things "on his own," but at this stage of his development, your help is critical.

  • How much does it cost to join Cub Scouting?

All Scouts and parent volunteers must be registered with Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Registration fees are $24 per year each, which will be pro-rated based on the month of the year you join. For example, if you join in September, you only pay from September through December ($8). An optional subscription to Boy's Life Magazine costs $12. There are scholarships available to families with limited funds.

Thanks to the BSA Popcorn fundraiser, Pack 3251 does not charge dues. This policy may change depending on the success of the annual sale. Individual optional activities may present additional costs; however, our goal is to involve each Scout with as little cost as possible to the family. For example, Day Camp fees may be offset by applying for a "Campership" scholarship from the Ventura County Council.
